I’ve always been inspired by cowboys, but as I grew up, I discovered that what I was drawn to wasn’t violent, colonial white men, but the parallel history that’s never told: that of Black cowboys, queer cowboys, and cowgirls. Unable to continue living in a society that rejected them so deeply, they marginalized themselves by living alone, with their horses, on the roads of the United States.
Today, I like to use the figure of the cowgirl and reclaim it—no longer as a sexualized figure, but as a person fighting against the patriarchy that forced her to exclude herself from society.
Also, I don’t want to romanticize the United States and prefer to place the cowgirl in space. I’ve always been passionate about astronomy, and the aliens that the main character fights would be a good metaphor for men and patriarchy.
