Artist’s statement

Chapter 1: EXPRESSION

i am not an artist, i just do things i have no interest in being true artist and it is my conscious choice

If this can no longer resonate No longer make my heart vibrate Then like this may be how I die my first death (BTS, “Black Swan”)

i shall not be afraid of my death as an artist as i have died once and i will die many more times this death is what marks the progress animation allows me to enjoy this progress to its fullest i don’t want my things to evoke emotions but i am full of passion i want my things to be:

“A shapeless shape, knowing neither fear or joy, that grows within a mold of ecstasy. quick silver !”(Ko Murobushi “quick silver” 2005)

to express oneself is to search oneself

Chapter 2: PERSONAL AND POLITICAL

i should work from myself but for others

the best job is a job of a teacher and being able to retranslate passion to others n-o-t-h-i-n-g exists without the context. if i think that there’s no context, i should search more no artistic technique exists without a context use the context question the technique personal is always political

Chapter 3: FAILURE

i should dance every day to remind myself of failure i should continue trying to speak french to remind myself of failure i should continue showing up at parties to remind myself of failure i should continue doing animation to remind myself of failure failure is beautiful, success is ugly

Chapter 4: CRINGE

i must accept cringe within myself and let it be my driving force if i cringe at something, it is because i fear its truth and if i’m scared of something, i should probably try to do it

Chapter 5: THINGS

i should do things and say things because things will not be done and said by themselves i have my medium for my things now i shall use it with respect and critique i shall be thankful to moving images for existing i shall not be scared of them i should question them and i should not forget to give them my love

I am not on any spectrums, as their opposite ends do not exist. I am not a being of some gender, gender is something I can possess. I possess the lack that is so thick that it now carries the essence. I am not a counterform, I am not a negative space, as they imply the existence of form and ‘positive’ space. I possess the suffix -ка until it becomes the norm. I am not ma 間, I am not the emptiness full of possibilities, I am just full.

processing SAROV

When I think about this, I remember how my friend Anya once cried on a bench by our building’s entrance in Chertanovo—crying because no one will ever truly understand another person. In grief, it seems to me, there is a particularly deep sense of that kind of loneliness. The pain I feel right now, curled up next to the fridge, choking on my tears; the pain with which I stare at the kitchen knife in my hand, trying with all my might not to move so I don’t cut myself right here and now; the pain that has made my favorite songs unbearable—this pain is mine alone.

Sarov over the years

the system of un-presence SAROV

I look at their old photos and I see life that I never assumed even existed. I never perceived them as something separate from my own life, as if everything they did revolved around me. Maybe that’s why their death felt like something in me has died. Not like an external tragedy, but an erasure of the part of me that I didn't even think I had.

Bereschino SAROV

I’ve entered the carriage. I didn’t want to stay in Bereschino any longer. I don’t know when exactly I’ll see this place – or an in-between space? – again. Everything’s very fragile right now. The last words that my grandma and grandpa told me before I left were: “We will live to see you again”.
